Brief Introduction to Qingdao University of Science and Technology
Founded in September 1950, Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST) is located in the beautiful costal city of Qingdao known as the “Eastern Switzerland”. It was formerly known as Qingdao Institute of Chemical Technology and got its present name in March of 2002 after the approval of the Education Ministry of China.
QUST has two campuses: the Sifang Campus has an area of 370,000 square meters. The East Laoshan Campus, covering 1,335,000 square meters, situates in the beautiful Old Stone Man National Tourist Resort. QUST has a staff of 2000, with 675 of them holding professorship, and 23,000 students, about 1000 of them being postgraduates or PhD students.
QUST has 19 colleges, 7 PhD majors, 49 Master’s degree majors, and 56 Bachelor’s degree majors. The majors are mainly Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Information and Controlling Engineering etc. have played important roles in China.
QUST always takes teaching as its core, and has educated more than 70,000 high-level graduates for the society. It emphasizes scientific research as well and has created a “QUST Phenomenon”. In the past decade, QUST has won 13 National Technical Invention Prizes and National Science and Technology Progress Prizes. It ranked the 5th in terms of State Technical Invention Prize (1997-1999), 74th for State Science and Technology Progress Prize (1997-1999), and 67th in terms of the number of Patent Applications (1985-2000). In 2003 and 2004, QUST ranked 87th , 66th and 83rd, 86th respectively for papers collected in SCI and EI among all the state universities in China. In 2005, the rank of QUST is 47th for essays published on SCI list and 100th on EI list among Chinese universities.
QUST develops rapidly in co-operation and exchange programs with foreign institutions. It has already established Sister University relationship with 31 universities from such countries as Russia, Germany, Korea, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, and USA. And it starts 12 joint-education programs with universities form Germany, Korea, France, USA, Estonia and Canada. The Sino-Germany Technical College co-established by Paderborn University (Germany) and QUST is considered as a model in both China and Germany.
Every year about 150 long-term international students and over 300 short-term ones study in QUST. They are mainly from Korea, USA, Russia, Viet Nam, Germany, Japan, Pakistan and India etc.
Every year, QUST employs about 30 foreign experts and teachers to teach English, German, Japanese, Russian, Korean, and other academic courses. And it also sends teachers and students abroad teaching and studying.
In the 57 years history, QUST aims to develop itself into a world famous teaching and research university offering academic degrees in Science, Engineering, Business, Management, Humanities, Medicine, Law, etc.
