Guizhou University

Guizhou University is a multidisciplinary provincial key university. It is the only university in the province prioritized to develop itself according to the criteria of the “Project 211” and one of the high-level universities in western China directly supported by the Ministry of Education of China. Its predecessor was Guizhou Institute of Higher Learning, which was set up in 1902. In 2004, the original Guizhou University of Technology and Guizhou University fulfilled the new merger under the name of Guizhou University.

Guizhou University covers a total area of 3328.5 hectors, comprising of 9 campuses in different areas in GuiyangCity, the Capital of Guizhou Provinces, with two main campuses being located in Huaxi, a famous natural scenic spot.

There are 24 colleges under the university administration. The university offers bachelor degrees in 101 areas, master degrees in 80 areas, doctorate in 4 areas, as well as 5 master diploma programs. The subjects involve nine branches of learning: philosophy, economics, laws, liberal arts, history, sciences, engineering, agriculture, veterinary medicine and administration.

Recently, the student population has reached 41,965, among which 39,566 are full time undergraduate students and 2,399 graduate students.

Guizhou University always places importance to develop international cooperation and exchanges. So far, the University has established cooperative and exchange relations with more than 20 academic institutions in such countries and regions as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Macao, etc. To maintain and develop these relations, Guizhou University receives visitors from these institutions and other areas.

The University has engaged foreign teachers and experts for teaching, lecture tours and academic exchange meetings. It has also enrolled oversea students from different countries to study Chinese and other courses in degree and non-degree academic programs. Through sending teachers and researchers overseas to study and research collaboratively with the foreign counterparts, degree study, or attending international academic workshop, Guizhou University has been better known worldwide. Therefore the progress of internationalization has been accelerated.

ARRANGEMENT OF CURRICULUM

1.The University offers a number of study modes
They include small group learning for non-native students; special individual tutoring; Summer school.

2.There are 14 contact hours per week at each learning levels for small classes; There are 6 contact hours per week for one-to-one.

2.   For short-term refresher students

A flexible curriculum caters to the needs and requirement of the students. Generally, courses of Chinese ABC, speaking, listening as well as special lectures on Chinese culture and the ethnic groups in China are offered.

3.   Optional Course (for an extra fee)

Chinese Culture, Outline of China, Chinese History, Chinese Customs, Chinese Idioms, Chinese Ethnic Groups and Religions, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, Magazine and Newspaper Reading, Writing Chinese Characters, Chinese Kongfu (including the shadow boxing), Chinese National Music and Dance, Chinese Cooking, and HSK Guidance, etc.

4. Extracurricular activities:

The Chinese corner, which is a free weekly conversation activity, is arranged where Chinese students from various departments share cultural experiences with the overseas students.

Social activities, which are provided free of charge, are generally conducted once a semester. These include sightseeing in GuiyangCity or Guizhou Province, touring local factories, schools and villages, attending recreational activities, such as concerts, acrobat shows, and exhibitions.

Extra activities also include attendance at sports events and other arts activities of the university, and other opportunities for social interaction.

After completing the courses and passing the examinations, a certificate of Chinese Language Training in Guizhou University will be issued.

CHARGES

1. Application fee: ¥200RMB (about 25 USD) for applicants in China
         ¥400RMB (about 50 USD) for applicants abroad

2. Registration fee:¥100RMB (about 13 USD)

3. Tuition:  Long-term students:

* One academic year ¥11400RMB (about 400USD )
*One academic semester ¥6000RMB (about 750USD)
Tuition cannot be refunded when a student discontinues his or her studies for any reason after enrollment.Short-term students

4. Lodging:

Students are provided with accommodations in the University International Hostel. New students are required to stay in the Hostel at least for one semester. After one semester, he or she can choose off campus living.
The rooms and apartments come with a bathroom, refrigerator, telephone, TV set, electric heating and fan Internet Access. Public Laundry facilities are provided for student’s use.
Upon arrival, a security deposit of ¥500 RMB (about 65 USD) is required from each student. When the student finishes his/ her study or moving out of the Guesthouse, the deposit will be returned if the room and facilities are kept in reasonable shape by the residents. Lodging agreement needs to be signed when moving into the Hostel.
To share a 3-person dorm room (separate bedroom, shared living room andbathroom): ¥500 RMB( around 65 USD) per month per student (electricity is charged separately).
To have a standard single room (with private bathroom): ¥600RMB (around 75USD) per month per person(electricity is charged separately).
To have a standard single room (with private bathroom and kitchen): ¥800RMB (around 100USD) per month per person(electricity is charged separately).

5. Other Cost

Food, medical, travel and other expenses are the responsibility of the students. Medical services are offered at the campus infirmary or at HuaxiHospital, which both are only a few blocks from the students' residence. Medical expenses are very reasonable. Students may have meals in the nearby restaurant or eat in the university canteen at a cost of less than one dollar per meal.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Applicants can obtain a copy of the Application Form for Enrollment of International Students to Guizhou University by means of correspondence, E-mail, fax and phone call;

2. The Filled-out Form should be mailed or faxed to the Foreign Affairs Department two months prior to the opening of school and the $15 application fee can be sent through banks;

3. Aside from the application form, the rest of personal materials needed for application include:
A. A copy of the front page of applicant’s valid passport;
B. Curriculum vita;
C. A copy of the latest educational certificate or diploma;
D. 6 copies of passport size photo;
E. Health check reports by government authorized hospitals with stamp.

4. Upon receiving the above documents, the Department will mail the applicants or their agents the Entrance Notice and Visa Application Form for Foreign Students to China (JW202 or Letter of Acceptance);

5. In case of late application, a student may apply for a tourist visa to come to China. Upon his or her arrival, the university will assist the student in obtaining a student visa. In this case, a health check report is not needed before the student comes to China. But he/she should submit the rest documents to the Department in order to request a Letter of Acceptance. The student can obtain international certificate of health examination in Guiyang City with the help of the Foreign Affairs Department at a reasonable price, which will be accepted all over China for long term residence

6. If the family members of students are coming together, they need to prepare

    • A copy of the front page of their valid passport;
    • 6 copies of passport size photo;
    • Health check reports by government authorized hospitals with stamp;
    • Birth Certificate(for the children);
    • Marriage Certificate (for the spouse)
    • Financial support affidavit (for degree program applicants)

NOTICE FOR REGISTRATION

1.All expenses are required to be paid in full at the time of registration.
2.Students are expected to arrive two days before the new semester begins. The Foreign Affairs Department needs to be informed of the date and flight number or train number of student’s arrival in advance so that a free picking-up can be arranged.

1.ACADEMIC PROGRAM

(1) 14 Chinese language classes are arranged in the mornings from Morning to Friday (5 days a week), in subjects such as Intensive Reading Extensive reading, Listening and Spoken Chinese or according to the student’ needs.

(2) 2 hour lectures are given in the afternoons three days a week on Chinese culture and Guizhou minority people’ culture, such as

Brief introduction to the History of China
Traditional Chinese Music
Chinese Watercolor Painting
Tai ji (a kind of traditional Chinese shadow boxing)

(3) 1 hour conversation group (Chinese corner) meeting once a week
Chinese students are invited to help foreign students practice Chinese and to share cultural experiences.

Total class time: 21 hours per week. Nevertheless, if students have special needs, class hours and curriculum can be arranged through negotiation.

2.TOURS

The following programs can be offered to the students upon mutual agreement:

(1) Short tours to scenic spots and historical landmarks such as,

  • HuaxiPark (a natural park, known as “the pearl of the plateau” with rivers, mountains, trees and flowers);
  • Qing Yan Town (an ancient town with its cultural heritage of stone gates, old city walls, temples, churches and Zhuang Yuan’s Home, etc. Zhuang Yuan is the title conferred on the only man who came first in the highest imperial examination in the history of Guizhou);
  • Qian Ling Park (a natural park with the highest mountain and biggest temple in Guizhou);
  • Under-groundPark(a typical calcium cave);
  • GaoPoMiaoVillage (a village on the top of a high mountain with cave burial grounds, ancient battle fields and the beautiful architecture of traditional Miao people’s houses);
  • ZhengShanVillage (a Buyi village with stone-roofed houses and colourful Buyi people’s customs);
  • SkyPoolPark(a natural park with rivers, mountains, caves, water mills and water wheels);
  • Visiting a local middle school;
  • Visiting a batik factory (tradition of the ethnic nationalities in Guizhou);
  • Marketing Day (The farmers from near and far take their products to the market on Sundays. It is the busiest and loveliest day of the week in the Huaxi area);
  • Picnic in HuaxiReservoirPark.

(2) Long trips to the most famous scenic spots in Guizhou Province take place on weekends

  • Huangguoshu Waterfall---TianxingBridgePark ---DragonPalace
    The world famous waterfall is 74 meters in height and 81 meters in width. A dozen on-land and under-ground waterfalls form a magnificent waterfall group. Flying waterfalls, Stone forests in the pools are scattered everywhere. The DragonPalace, a magnificent water cave, is the largest calcium water cave discovered in China.)
  • HongfengLake
    It is 35 km. away from Guiyang city. Visitors are always found lingering about its beautiful mountains, caves and dotted islets. The lake is surrounded by Miao and Dong villages.
  • Xiangzi Ditch
    The workshops of hand-made bamboo paper with traditional skill are located on both sides of the Xiangzi Ditch. Visitors enjoy riding horses along the ditch, inspecting the workshops.
  • ZhijinCave
    Another big cave with different shapes of beautiful stalactite mouldings, is regarded by experts as one of the most valuable examples of calcium caves in the world.
  • ZunyiCity
    It is the second largest city in Guizhou. In January 1935, during the Chinese Red Army’s Long March, the world famous Zunyi Meeting was held here, which created a most important page in the history of the Chinese Revolution.

(3) Travel outside the Province also can be arranged.

3.COST

(1) Tuition: US$ 250 per person for a 3-week program.
(2) Lodging:
US$ 5 per day (2 persons) for sharing a two-person dorm room;
US$ 20 per day (2 persons) for twin-share rooms when travels outside the city on weekends.
(3) Food:
US$ 5.50 per day for 3 meals in the university canteens or small restaurants near the International Student Guesthouse or the University students’ canteens during weekdays;
US$ 8 per day for 3 meals when traveling outside the city on weekends
(4) Travel: US$250 per person for
Two short tours to scenic spots or historical relics in Guiyang City
Two long trips to the most famous scenic spots in Guizhou Province
One long trip to a neighboring province (Such as Yunnan, Guangxi, or Chongqing)
The students also can select travel routs, but fees will depend on the chosen routes.
(5) Management
US$ 25 per person covers all the costs for interpreters and tour guides.
