Panzhihua City is situated in western China, along the upstream region of the Changjiang River and on the bank of the Jinsha River. It is a modernized city named after a flower whose surrounding are rich in natural resources. Mr. Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China’s reform and opening up, once made the comment “This land is richly endowed by nature.” It is an important base of iron, steel and vanadium as well as titanium in China and is the economic and cultural center of Southwest Sichuan and Northwest Yunnan. Panzhihua University is a comprehensive university of higher learning, focusing mainly on engineering courses. The university is focus on educating students while constantly moving forward as an institution is summed up in its motto --- “Understanding virtues and cultivating strong wills, promoting extensive learning and advocate sure-footed working, striving continuously to make new progress and forge ahead”. Panzhihua University covers an area of 840,000 square meters. Presently there are 700 professional teachers with 215 associate professors or professors, 301 masters or doctors, and many experts and academic leaders who have made great contribution to the municipal and provincial development. There are 14 schools and departments, including the School of Materials Engineering, School of Electromechanical Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Economics and Management, Medical Science School, and many more, which provide undergraduate courses in 32 specialties areas. Within these areas are a wide range of programs covering seven branches of learning, including science, engineering, liberal arts, law, economics, management, and medical science. The University now has a total enrollment of over 12,000 students from all over the country (30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government).

Panzhihua University covers a total building area of 500,000 square meters and the area of stadiums and gymnasiums is more than 50,000 square meters. The total value of scientific and equipment is more than RMB 90,000,000 yuan, and the total amount of books in our library is more than 1,500,000. There are more than 2000 computers for teaching and 9000 seats in the multi-media classrooms and the language classrooms. In addition, we have a system of practical instruction with 17 practical teaching centers and nearly 200 partnerships with corporations and factories across China for students to gain practical experience.

Panzhihua University takes the guidance of doing scientific researches to promote education and strengthen up. Panzhihua University is also home to seven provincial and municipal key laboratories and research centers. In recent years, the teachers have published 1600 academic dissertation, nearly 100 monographs and textbooks, undertaken more than 250 research programs and acquired 11 state invention patents, among which the studies on Electrolysis Reduction of TiO2 to Titanium and Expansion Mechanism of Fine Flaky Graphite are especially important domestically. In addition, our research on an Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilization of Vanadium Bearing Titano-magnetite Concentrate is changing the way people view the uses of vanadium around the world.

There are rich and varied extracurricular scientific and cultural activities, providing a stage for the students to explore their talents. Since 2004, there have been more than 40,000 students who have taken part in all kinds of activities. And more than 100 students have won prizes in national and provincial competitions of science and technology.
The construction and development of Panzhihua University embodies the care of leaders at all levels. Mr. Li Tieying, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and Vice Chairman of the NPC, once took an inspection of our university and proclaimed “Panzhihua University is running the university with good characteristics and cultivating practical talents.” Mr. Fang Yi, former Vice Premier wrote the name of Panzhihua University. Mr. Zhang Baoqing, former deputy minister of the National Educational Bureau, paid a visit and instructed us to build a good university. In recent years, the number of students applying for our university has increased rapidly, and the enrolment rate of new students who select Panzhihua University as their first or second choice is higher than 90%. In addition, more than 90% of Panzhihua University graduates find jobs, with many becoming leading members of the communities.
